Importance of Saemaul Undong Training

• Saemaul Undong Training is to practice Saemaul Undong spirits in everyday life for a successful Saemaul project, improve one’s mindset and attitude, and develop competencies to utilize Saemaul Undong and make social progress in recipient countries.

Characteristics of Saemaul Undong Training

• Saemaul Undong Training improves habits in daily life through systematic control to internalize Saemaul Undong spirits while all training personnel including directors, instructors and lecturers demonstrate Saemaul Undong spirits, lead by example and eat, sleep and stay together with trainees for training.

• (Senior Policymaker Course) Policymakers such as ministers, vice ministers, chief directors, directors
• (Manager Course) Middle-level managers at the central or local governments
• (Working-level Personnel Course) Project managers such as local government officials and Saemaul leaders
• (Integrated Course for Each Country) Directors and managers from the central government, local government officials, Saemaul leaders and villagers for each country

• Training Curriculum
  • - (Theory Training) Theory Training consists of Saemaul Undong’s overview, planning strategies and action strategies, which aim to build the theoretical foundation.
  • - (Site Visit) Site Visit is a course where trainees visit in person the places that have Saemaul Undong’s history, generate income, show best practices and implement agricultural technologies and learn through experience.
  • - (Visit to Agency) Visit to Agency is a course where trainees visit government agencies, public institutions, local governments and other relevant institutions and learn information about Saemaul Undong via interviews with key personnel.
  • - (Group Discussion) Group Discussion is a course where about 20 trainees form a group, select a subject through discussion, analyze problems and come up with action plans to resolve the problems.
  • - (Cultural Experience) Cultural Experience is a course where trainees experience various aspects of Korean culture and understand Korea’s cultural, political, economic and social characteristics.
  • - For Daily Life Training, trainees comply with daily life rules set up by the training center and internalize the Saemaul Undong spirit of diligence, self-help and cooperation.

Training Method

• Trainees are treated as equals regardless of their social status and position, and it is emphasized that every trainee is under the same conditions in Saemaul Undong training.
